Summary
5-speed manual. Clean title in hand. Updated smog will be done this month so that the car is ready to transfer ownership. I have owned this car since 2015 and has garage/storage kept since. Any work performed under my ownership was done with genuine BMW parts, unless OE or aftermarket was considered a better alternative. I always try to make sure any upgrades are high quality and considered OEM+ by the e36 community. A folder full of documentation during my ownership will go with the car.
In 2015, this car was purchased by a used auto shop in Santa Rosa, and is noted as “owner … Dealer Inventory” on 5/9/2015 on the Carfax report, which explains the short 3 month ownership. I purchased the car from this shop (Good Stuff Auto).
Some things to know
- The car was in a minor accident in a parking lot before my ownership — this resulted in the front passengers side fender being replaced and, as far as I can tell, the front fenders, hood, and bumper were resprayed. The re-spray looks generally good to my eyes, and matches well. There is one small paint run on the passengers side of the bumper cover. Regarding any possible front end damage — I have since replaced most of the front end components, including the wheels, struts, control arms, steering rack, and associated parts. I also have new knuckles, wheel hubs, rotors and pads that I was eventually planning to install — these parts will go with the car.
- The paint is in great shape for a car with these miles. It has its imperfections as you’ll see in the photos. It could also use a polish (I’m betting a one step polish would make it look great). I don’t have a paint gauge, sorry. Pay close attention to the photos, as you’ll see someone keyed the lower part of the rear bumper cover on the passengers side. It’s not overly visible due to the location, but want to make sure it’s pointed out.
- The passengers side window does not currently roll down. The motor wants to work, but I believe the door panel needs to come off so that the track can be cleaned
- The drivers side exterior door handle will eventually need to be replaced. It’s cracked internally, but functions and operates without issue. A new handle goes (uninstalled) with the car.
- The drivers side heated seat has not worked at all under my ownership. I had planned to have the seats reupholstered, so I never did spend time figuring out what was wrong with it.
- I recently noticed the steering wheel started to shake at highway speeds (about 55-70MPH). I’m going to try to diagnose, but it’s either flat spots on the tires from sitting, a wheel balance issue, or maybe the spacers. The car has never been hit or ran into a pothole during my ownership (2015 to today) so I can’t imagine it’s a damaged component. The wheels were bought directly from BMW by me in 2017 (if I’m remembering correctly), and the tires have maybe 5K miles on them. With this all said, I do have new brake rotors, pads, steering knuckles, and wheel bearings that will be going with the car when it sells.
